Canada has a working holiday program with several countries. The Working Holiday program is set up to encourage cultural exchange and closer ties between arrangement countries by allowing young people to have an extended holiday supplemented by short-term employment.

Take a look at the links below to figure out the requirements from your country. The arrangement is different with each country and depending on where you are from you may have different restrictions put on your application. (Age, money required etc). The working holiday program is a great and cheap way to get a visa to Canada.

Well depending on the amount of time you have in the city there are few options you could look into. Here are some suggestions:

Temp Agency - There are tons of employment agency in Vancouver, they specialize in everything from hospitality to office work. Vancouver2010 – If you’re planning on staying in Vancouver through Feb 2010 check out www.vancouver2010.com. There are a ton of jobs advertised.

Local Mountains – The local Vancouver Ski Hills are always looking for staff.
Grouse Mountain: http://www.grousemountain.com/Summer/about-us/careers/
Seymour Mountain: http://www.mountseymour.com/employment-opportunities
Cypress Mountain: http://www.cypressmountain.com/jobs.html

Construction – There’s a temp construction company at Broadway and Commercial. If you show up first thing in the morning and wait they’ll put you into whatever jobs become available. It’s a no strings attached job. They pay you at the end of day and you’re done. The rate is pretty crap but it’s a quick way to make a few bucks. Sorry for not having the name, next time I’m in the neighborhood I’ll update this page.

Inventa – Inventa is a promotions company that is regularly hiring on a casual basis. Great jobs handing out promo material etc.  http://www.inventaworld.com

Craigslist – You can find everything on craigslist, it’s a free online classified listings. There are 100’s of jobs everyday. Just be careful and use commonsense, as there are always people out there trying to take advantage.

Online Search – The two major jobsites are www.monster.ca , www.workopolis.ca

Almost, only here in Vancouver its Plane, Trains, Bus, Boats and Automobiles. Here are some tips for when you arrive. If you need any more info drop me a line. – Fran

Plane
If you're arriving into the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) the cheapest way to get into the city is by public bus. If you walk out of the departures terminal theres a stop there. The fare is $2.50 per adult and you need exact change. The drivers are pretty friendly so just let them know where you need to go and they'll help you out. Otherwise you can take a cab for $25.00 into downtown.
Here's a local tip for you: If there a few of you arriving and you have a bunch of luggage - its cheaper to take a limo to downtown then pay for two cabs. Just look around the terminal there are usually drivers waiting for people needing rides

Trains/ Buses
If you’re arriving in Vancouver by train or bus you’ll most likely be dropped at the terminal station. This station is only a few minutes outside of downtown. While the station is just a minute or two outside of the city centre its borders the downtown eastside which is not one of the nicest parts of the city. There are always cabs lined up outside so grab a taxi and for between $5-10 you’ll be town in no time.

Boat
If you’re arriving in Vancouver by water there are a few arrival points. Make sure you check where itinerary so you know what to expect.

Swartz Bay/ Horse Shoebay - If you’re arriving into one of these terminals you will need to make your way into town by bus or taxi. From Swartz Bay I believe there are some private company which will take you right into the terminal station or you can go the public transit route. With public transit you will probably be looking at an hour from Horseshoe bay and maybe an hour and a half from Swartz. You could also try a cab but it would be pretty steep! Remember- you always need exact change for the bus. It would be between 3 and 4 bucks from the ferries.
Canada Place – If you’re arriving by Cruise ship you’ll most likely be arriving at Canada Place. You’re right in the middle of town so just walk off any enjoy the day.

Car
If you’re coming into the city by car – buy a map! It’s a pretty easy city get around because it’s a giant grid. Just remember – there are no highways going through Vancouver. The speed limit on a regular city street is 50km/h.

Well the sun is shining and all I can recommend is that you take this opportunity to get outside and enjoy it! There are very few places which can compare to Vancouver on a sun days.  One of the great things about Vancouver is you don’t need a ton of cash to have a great day. Here are my top 10 recommendations for enjoying a “Cheap Sunny Vancouver Sunday”:

  • Head down to Jericho or Kits Beach for a BBQ or Picnic
  • Find a patio for a couple drinks and great people watching
  • Ride a bike around Stanley Park and the sea Wall
  • Walk around Granville Island
  • Lay in the grass and read a book at Queen Elizabeth Park
  • Take a run in Pacific Spirit Park
  • Go for a hike in lighthouse Park
  • Watch a cricket match in Stanley Park
  • Check out the Lynn Valley Suspension Bridge (like the Capilano one but free!)
  • Grab some gelato on Commercial Drive.
